What is Aeration?

Aeration is one of the single most important procedures you can carry out on your lawn. It opens up oxygen pathways to allow water, air and nutrients direct access to the root system.

Over time, if a lawn receives a lot of use, soil can become compacted which can affect the health of your grass. Firmly packed soil can easily become waterlogged as moisture cannot pass through efficiently. There are a few different types of aeration, hollow-tine and fracture-tine are the best. I will recommend the one most suited to the condition of your lawn.

What is Scarification?

This is a labour-intensive process that involves the removal of organic matter from your lawn which affects the quality of your grass and inhibits its growth. A thin layer of ‘thatch’ on your lawn is actually beneficial, but when it gets too deep it can impede water and fertiliser take-up and encourage moss and weeds to take over.

Your lawn should be scarified at least once a year as an annual spring or autumn lawn care treatment to keep the thatch level controlled whilst only causing minimal temporary stress to the lawn and allowing the lawn to recover during the growing period.

Depending on the condition of your lawn scarification may be carried out in conjunction with over-seeding and or top dressing but I’ll discuss this with you when appraising your lawn.
